God Saves His People

There is a verse that deeply stirred my spirit today — “If the Lord had not been on our side…” (Psalm 124:1).
I found  a song of David that celebrates the faithfulness of God toward His people. David looks back at Israel’s history and says, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us alive.” What a declaration!

These words remind us that every victory, every deliverance, every moment of protection we have experienced is not because of our strength, wisdom, or luck — it’s because God was on our side. Without Him, our enemies, whether physical or spiritual, would have swallowed us whole. We would have been crushed by the pressures of life. But God stepped in, and His saving hand lifted us out of danger.

Only God’s People Can Say This

Notice that David says, “If the Lord had not been on our side — let Israel say…”
That statement is not universal. It’s not for everyone. It’s for God’s people — those who belong to Him, those who walk with Him, those who live under His covenant.

This is a powerful truth that our generation sometimes forgets: not everyone on earth can say, “God is on my side.” We are all God’s creation, but we are not all God’s people. To become God’s people, we must enter into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

God saves His people, not just anyone who calls His name without relationship or obedience. Salvation is available to all, but it becomes effective only for those who receive Christ, believe in His Word, and live according to His ways.

That’s why the title of this message is so important — God Saves His People. Not everyone will experience His salvation unless they belong to Him. And belonging to God is not about being perfect, but about being surrendered, obedient, and faithful.

The Meaning of Being God’s Person

Being God’s person means you are marked by His presence. It means you live under His covering and walk according to His will. It means your confidence is not in what you can do, but in who He is.

In Psalm 124, David reflects on battles and dangers that Israel faced. He says that if the Lord had not been with them, their enemies would have destroyed them. This shows us that being God’s person doesn’t mean you won’t face attacks — it means you won’t be defeated by them.

We live in a world filled with struggles, temptations, and enemies of the faith. Many times, we are surrounded by forces that want to swallow our peace, our faith, and our hope. But when God is on your side, He turns the battle in your favor. He breaks the traps set against you. He rescues you from danger that you never even saw coming.

That’s what it means to be God’s person — to live protected, even when you don’t realize how close danger was.

Salvation Belongs to the Lord

Psalm 124 ends with this beautiful line:

> “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

That’s not just a poetic statement — it’s a powerful truth. Our help, our strength, our victory, and our salvation come only from God. You can’t save yourself. You can’t rely on people, because people fail. You can’t rely on power or possessions, because they fade. But the Lord — the Maker of heaven and earth — never fails those who belong to Him.

And this is the condition: to belong to Him. For us to qualify for God’s salvation, we must first be His people. God saves His people — those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and live under His Word. You can’t claim His promises without first being part of His covenant.

When you surrender your heart to Jesus, you are no longer just one of God’s creations — you become part of His family. You are marked by His grace, and your name is written in His book of life. That’s when Psalm 124 becomes your story too. You can boldly say, “If the Lord had not been on my side…” and look back with gratitude, knowing that God saved you.

God Still Saves His People Today

This message is not just ancient history. It’s real and relevant right now. God is still saving His people — from sin, from destruction, from attacks, from hopelessness. Even today, many of us can testify, “If the Lord had not been on my side, I would not be here.”

Every breath you take, every battle you’ve survived, every blessing you’ve received — it’s because God saved you. He protected you when you didn’t even know the danger that was coming. He gave you strength when you were too weak to stand.

That’s what God does for His people. He rescues, He restores, He redeems, and He saves.

So, today, I want to ask you: Are you one of God’s people?
Because the difference between being God’s creation and being God’s child determines the kind of help you receive.

Let this Psalm be a reminder that life without God’s covering is dangerous, but life under His protection is victorious. The same Lord who saved Israel still saves today — not just nations, but individuals who choose to belong to Him.

If you are one of His, you can rest assured: no matter what comes your way, you will not be swallowed.

God saves His people — make sure you are one of them.
